A

ALLEN, Richard

Richard Allen, age 68, recently passed away. A long time resident of Schurz, Richard was born in Fallon, NV on February 20, 1932 to Tom Allen and Mammie Lulu Dale.

He attended Carson Indian School from 2945 to 1948,

Richard was emplyed as custodian at Indian Health Services in Schurz and drove the ambulance for the Schurz Indian Hospital. He also worked for the Churchill County Schools. He retired in 1985.

On one occassion, Richard helped put out a railroad boxcar fire of explosives in Schurz and helped prevent loss of property and lives. For this he received an award from President John F. Kennedy.

He played in a popular local band that he formed called the "Crushers" in the 60's, Ge was a well known and popular bull rider in the local circuits and held membership with the NIRA-Nevada Indian Rodeo Association.

Richard is survived by his wife, Eliza Allen of Schurz; daughter, Elaine R,. Bender of Pinetop, AZ, son, Richard Thomas Allen of Schurz; grandson, Shiloe Hyoungblond Bender of Pinetop, AZ; uncle, Teddy Allen of Schurz; brother, Andrew Allen of Schurz; and sisters, Mary Johnson, Irene Williams, Marjorie Johnson and Catherine Martinez, all of Schurz. Also numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held tomorrow, Thursday, August 17, at 11:00 a.m. at the Schurz TribalGym. A potluck dinner will follow. Donations are being accepted in lieu of flowers are greatly needed and appreciated by the family at the service.

ARCHULETA, Fred O.

Fred O. Archuleta age 81, a long time resident of Hawthorne, passed away Wednesday, 23 May 2001 at Washoe Medical Center in Reno. Fred was born 1 March 1920 in Cerro, New Mexico, a son of Nicanor and Beatriz Quintana Archuleta.

Fred moved to Hawthorne in 1950, coming here from Cerro, New Mexico. He was retired from the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hawthorne, where he had worked for 30 yrs. He was an Army Veteran of WW II. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2313. He was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees of Hawthorne Chapter #1854.

Fred was a parishioner of Our Lord of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, and was a member of Knights of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. His survivors are his wife, Ruth Archuleta of Hawthorne; sons, David Archuleta (wife Lori) and grandson Kristopher, all of Stratham, New Hampshire, Johnny Archuleta (wife Rhonda) and four grandchildren, Amanda, John, Chris, and Leeanna, all of Sparks, Nevada; a sister, Tessie Atencio of Denver, Colorado; and many nieces and nephews.

A Rosary was held on Monday, 28 May 2001 at Gunter’s Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation was Monday, 28 May from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Gunter’s Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, 29 May at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, with burial following at the Hawthorne the Hawthorne Cemetery, with full military honors. of Luning. Born Wisconsin. A rancher and miner, a widower. Died at Luning, Nevada 19 May 1933. Survived by one sister and four brothers who live in South Dakota; a step-daughter, Mrs. Helen Myerson of Los Angeles, CA, a daughter, Rose. Also had a son, George, who died recently. Al C. BASSETT, Robert M.

Robert M. Bassett passed away at age 81 on 9 Jul 2000 at Mount Grant Hospital in Hawthorne. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on 20 Oct 1918 to Robert and Ella Nugent Bassett.

Robert has lived in Hawthorne since 1985, coming from Silver Springs, NV. He was a retire auto mechanic, retiring in 1980.

Robert was a member of American Legion Post #19 and V.F.W. Post #2313, both of Hawthorne, Model Railroad Club of Fallon, was an avid skier, rollerskater, hiker, and ski instructor.

Robert served as a B-52 bomber pilot during WWII in the European Theatre.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one brother, seven daughters and eight sons. Surviving Robert are his daughter, Roberta Barr of Hawthorne; companion, Dorothy Peterson of Hawthorne; and grandson, Leroy Denten of Minnesota.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, July 17, at 10:00 a.m. at Gunter’s Funeral Home Chapel in Hawthorne. Burial will take place Monday, July 17, at 2:00 p.m. at the Norther Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley, NV. Arrangements are under the direction of Gunter’s Hawthorne Funeral Home.

BATTEN, Willa Victoria Corona

Willa Victoria Corona Batten, AGE 52, died 15 Jul 2000 from an extended illness in Jacksonville, NC. She was born 19 Jan 1948.

Willa is survived by her mother, Marion Copple of Hawthorne; sister, Linda Dickison of Hawthorne; three sons and a daughter, Michael St Clair of Tampa, Florida, Tony St. Clair, John Batten and Lora Batten, all of Jacksonville, NC; three grandchildren, Kyle, Austin and Courtney St. Clair, and two nieces, Car Pace of Hawthorne and Heather Kelley of Citrus Heights, CA.

BETTLES, Gordon

spent most of his life in Nevada. Married to Billie. While in Hawthorne, operated and owned laundry business and tailor shop. Nd 29 Aug 1962; died "last week" while on business trip to Los Angeles, CA. Buried 29 Aug 1962 at Beatty, by Masonic Lodge. Survived by 3 daughters and 2 sons: Mrs. Patsy Glessner of Las Vegas, Mrs. Helen Beasley of Las Vegas; Mrs Edith Brockman of CA; R.J. and William C. Fishel. 11 grand children, 9 great grandchildren. BIRCHUM, Delores Marie

Delores Marie (Williams) Birchum passed away at the age of 71, at Fallon Community Hospital on 15 Jul 2000. She was born at Schurz, NV on 4 Jul 1929, a daughter of Murphy and Mamie Williams.

Delores was a homemaker. As a youth she attended Stewart Indian School.

Surviving are her sons, Roger Cunha Sr., Calvin Birchum, Ronnie Birchum, Charles Birchum, Elvin Willie and Edward Willie; daughters, Linda Willie, Karen Harrison, Joni Birchum, Joleen Birchum and Eileen Birchum; brothers, Elvin, Jack, Clarence and Everett Williams; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Visitation will be this evening, Wednesday, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Smith’s Family Funeral Home in Fallon. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in Schurz at the Tribal Gymnasium, with a potluck dinner to follow. Source: MCIN, Wednesday, 19 Jul 2000, Page 5

BLACK, Fred Leroy

Fred Leroy Black passed away at age 62 on 8 Jul 2000 at Mount Grant General Hospital in Hawthorne. He was born in Henryetta, Oklahoma on 11 Nov 1937 to William and Thelma White Black.

Fred has lived in Hawthrne for the past 22 years coming from CA. He operated a courier service in Hawthorne as well as working for Mount Grant Hospital.

He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1976.

He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1704, Hawthorne and a member of First Christian Church.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bill Black. He is survived by his wife, Nancy J. Wubbenhorst Black of Hawthorne; son, John Black, and daugher, Jane Gokey, both of Hawthorne; brothers, Lawrence Black of Greenville, Texas and Kenneth Black of Tulsa, Oklahoma; nine grandchildren and five great-granchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, 18 Jul, at 1:00 p.m. at Gunter’s Funeral Home Chapel in Hawthorne. Inurnment will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Reno. Arrangements are under the direction of Gunter’s Hawthorne Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society, 712 Mill St., Reno, NV 89502

BOTT, Ian H. "Jack"

Ian H. "Jack" Bott passed away at age 94 on July 4, 2000 at Mount Grant Hospital in Hawthorne. He was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada on 2 May 1906 to Owen and Elizabeth Middleton Bott.

His father, Owen Bott, owned and operated drug stores in Mason, Nevada and Mina, Nevada as well as Hawthorne, which was passed on to his son "Jack".

Jack graduated from the University of California, Berkeley. He has lived in Hawthorne since 1938, moving here from Hawaii.

Hack was a life member of the Hawthorne Lions Club, life member of Hawthorne P.T.A.>, a member of Hawthorne B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1704, and was instrumental in raising funds for and building the original swimming pool at Lions Park in Hawthorne.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, brother Graham Bott, and His first wife Mary Alice. He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise Quakenbush Bott of Hawthorne; son, Terance Bott of Charlotte, North Carolina; Step-son Clifford Burrous of Santa Clara, CA; daughters, Jill Damschen of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and Drucilla Davidson of Lowell, Mass.; eight grandchildren, Bradley, Todd and Brent Damschen, Tammy Kern, Sandra McGarr, Jane Childry, Tracey Mouliason, and Christopher Burrous; and seven great-grandchildren.

As one of Nevada’s first licensed pharmacists, Mr. Bott was the owner and operator of the Golden Key Drug Store in Hawthorne which included a drugstore and pharmacy, travel agency, flower shop and Western Union and, in early years, an appliance store. Mr. Bott was a practicing pharmacist until the age of 91.

Mr. Bott requested that no wake or funeral service be held for him. In his memory, the family will host a Celebration of Life party barbecue on Saturday, July 22 at 1:00 p.m. at Lions Park in Hawthorne. All who knew him or loved him are invited.

It is requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Mt. Grant General Hospital.

BURFIELD, Bonnie Emogene

Bonnie Emogene Burfield, 88, died of pneumonia on Monday, 7 May 2001 at the Desert Valley Hospital in Victorville, CA. Born 28 Nov 1912 in Virgil, Missouri, she lived in Lyons, Kansas for twelve years and had lived in Barstow, CA for the past two years coming from Sun Valley, NV and Reno where she had lived since 1951.

Emogene was a bookkeeper for Harolds Club in Reno for 20 years. She attended all her school years in Hutchinson, Kansas and two years at the Salt City Business College in Hutchinson. She volunteered for the Senior Citizens Center in Reno. She belonged to the Harolds Pioneers, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, and was a member of the Sparks United Methodist Church in Sparks.

She loved to bowl and take care of everyone, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Bessie Kaufman Wright, her husband, Virgil Burfield, son Roger Burfield, four brothers, Kermit, Kenneth, Ralph, and Bill Wright, and two sisters, Dorothy Wright and Bernice Herman.

Survivors include two daughters, DeVona Scott of Hawthorne, and Vicky Taylor of Bartsow, CA; one son, Ritchie Burfield of Sandy, UT; 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Walton’s Funeral Home on Sullivan Lane in Sparks was in charge of arrangements. Burial was at the Masonic Memorial Gardens, Visitation was held Friday, 11 May, at the Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Saturday, 12 May.

of Gabbs, NV. Born Silver Peak, NV 11 Apr 1910. Wife is Frances Hill Chiatovich. He was eldest child of Mr and Mrs Martin Chiatovich. He died 25 Mar 1960 in San Francisco, CA. born Chiatovich Ranch in Fish Lake Valley, NV 3 May 1887. Married to Beatrice. He was a Deputy Sheriff of Esmeralda County, NV. Had been a miner most of his life, working at Silver Peak, Gilbert, Mina, and Gabbs, NV. Three years ago moved to Coaldale, NV. Died in Tonopah 17 Dec 1958, buried at Silver Peak 20 Dec 1958. Survived by sons, Stanley of Gabbs, Jack of Yerington, Pat of Tonopah, and Robert of Austin and Alamo - all NV. One sister; Mrs. Lillian McCloskey of Reno. of Mina. Born Austin, NV. Married to Margaret Falvey. Worked Tonopah and Goldfield RR; died Tonopah 13 Jul 1937 aged 39 yrs, buried at Goldfield. Survived by 2 children, 5 sisters, and a brother, Will Falvey. ND = 14 Jul 1937

FAUST, Mary Corning

born LaCrosse, Wis 25 May 1887. Married to George Faust. Died at Goldfield 3 Nov 1928 and buried there. Has a daughter aged 4 yrs - Phila May Faust.

GARRISON, Johnnie DeWayne

Johnnie DeWayne Garrison was age 67 when he passed away on June 25, 2000 at his home in Mina, Nevada. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri on April 30, 1933 to Thomas and Gertrude Sears Garrison.

Johnnie has lived in Mina since 1967, moving there from Hawthorne, where he had lived since the mid-1950's. He owned and operated Sue's Motel in Mina. Johnnie was also chief surveyor for Candalaria Mine, as well as doing surveying and staking claims for mining companies throughout the Western United States.

Throughout his life in public and civic service, Johnnie had served as a Mineral County Hospital Trustee, EMT II, Mineral County Deputy Sheriff, CPR and EMT Instructor, and was a member of the Mina Volunteer Fire Department.

Johnnie Served in the Marines Corps during the Korean Conflict.

He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Garrison. His survivors are his daughters, Tisha Jarosch of Mina and Stephanie Garrison of Winnemucca, NV; son, John L. Garrison of Springfield, Oregon; brothers, Thomas, Ronald, Daniel, Michael and Glenn Garrison, all of Kansas City, MO; mother, Gertrude Garrison of Kansas City, MO; sisters, Shirley Larbruzzo, Marilyn Hammes and Barbara Hixson, all Kansas City, MO; three grandchildren, Travis Garrison of Mina and Trevor and Tyler Garrison of Springfield, Oregon.

unmarried; worked in construction work at Hawthorne, and also at the Simon Mine E/O Mina. Died 19 nov 1946, 20 miles E/O Austin, NV, aged 47 yrs. Buried 24 Noc at Silver Peak, NV. Survived by two brothers and four sisters. Two of the sisters are Mrs. Jessie Arnold of Babbitt, NV and Mrs Ernest Shirley of Silver Peak, NV.

GRIMSHAW, Laural "Larry" G

The family and friends of Master Sergeant Laural "Larry G. Grimshaw (Ret.) Sadly bid him a fond farewell. On May 9, 2001 he passed away in Cartersville, Georgia.

A native of Goble, Oregon, he wqas born on October 23, 1928. He served in the military from 1948 through 1968 where he saw service in Japan, Germany, Korea, and Vietnam, and retired as a Master Sergeant.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Grimshaw of Carterville, Georgia; sons, Ralph Grimshaw of Rushe, Oregon, John Grimshaw of San Diego, CA, and Bill Bean of Hawthorne, NV; daughters, Karla Katzenback of Grants Pass, Oregon, Ramona Livingstone of Ashland, Oregon, and Barbara Woodfin of Cartersville, Georgia. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

Preceding him in death were his parents, 1 brother, and 2 grandchildren. He was cremated and his remains are now resideing in Arlington National Cemetery. (ND = Thursday, 24 May 2001 Source: MCIN)

HAGEL, Elmer

Elmer Hagel, age 75, passed away Friday, 4 May 2001 at Manor Care Convalescent Home in Layton, UT. He was born 29 Jun 1925 in Linton, ND to Christ and Ruth Beurtsch Hagel.

Elmer attended Eureka High School in South Dakota. He served in the United States Navy during WWII from 20 Oct 1943 to 18 Apr 1946.

Elmer married Evelyn Koller in Bismark, ND on 15 Feb 1958. He retired from civil service in 1980 in Hawthorne where he and his wife lived for 33 years until moving to Layton, UT in 1998.

He was a deacon in the Hawthorne Presbyterian Church for 6 years. He was also a scoutmaster for Boy Scouts of America, a member of VFW and the American Legion. Elmer liked hunting, fishing, baseball, football, basketball, camping and traveling.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Ronald Stewart. Survivors are his wife, Evelyn Hagel of Layton, UT; daughters and their husbands, Bernetta and Paul Meier of Hawthorne, NV, Lynnette and Karl Fleischbein of Sacramento, CA, Dianna and Ron Wheeler of Sparks, NV; son and his wife, Henry and Holly Hagel of Layton, UT; grandchildren, Vaughan and Eric Fleischbein, Justin and Carla Wheeler, and Joy, Kristin and Ariel Hagel; sister, Selma Kary of Eureka, SD; and three nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday, 11 May at 11:00 a.m. at Linquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd., Layton, UT.

Friends and family may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment will be in Camp Williams Cemetery.

HANSEN, Suellen

Suellen Hansen, 45, died 6 May 2001 at Washoe Medical Center, Reno. She was born 12 Dec 1945 in Washington D.C.

Mrs. Hansen had recently returned to Nevada coming from Lawton, Oklahoma. She had worked as a casino cashier in the Fallon, Reno, Jackpot and Wendover areas. She loved the outdoors, especially fishing and roads trips in rural Nevada.

She was preceded in death by a stepson, Justin Hansen, and a sister-in-law, Julie Hansen.

Surviving are her husband, Terry Hansen; of Hawthorne; parents, James and Janet McNulty, of California; sister, Anne Martinez, of Oklahoma; brother, James McNulty of New Mexico; stepdaughter, Terri Lynn Hansen, of Reno; and three grandchildren, Anthony, Brian and Kimberly.

A memorial service, was held Monday, 14 May at the Church of Jesus Christ Spirit Filled in Sparks, Nevada. Cremation was at Sierra Crematory, Reno, under the direction of Walton’s Sparks Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas at a later date. HATTON, William Davidson

of Tonopah. Born Wichita, Kansas 10 Oct 1876, son of Judge Charles Hatton. Received education in Wichita. Admitted to Colorado Bar 1902, entered practice with his father in Goldfield, NV 1905, until 1916. Moved to Los Angeles to practise from 1917 to 1917, then returned to NV. First wife was Mary McLaughlin. They had three sons, all of whom survive - William J., an atorney in Las Vegas, NV; Charles T., founder of Hatton’s Men Store in Reno; and John. First wife died 1936. Second wife was Mary Olipant, married in 1939. She survives. He served as District Judge in the Fifth Judicial District (Mineral, Mye and Esmeralda Counties), from 1935 until July 1957. He died in Reno 29 May 1958, aged 82 yrs. Survived by wife, three sisters, Mrs. Catherine Welcome of San Diego, CA; Mrs. Alive Kistner of Pasadena, CA and Mrs. Louise Hall of Los Angeles. JOHNSON, Dean Ivan

Dean Ivan Johnson, 74, a former resident of Hawthorne, and most recently of Reno, NV, died Thursday 3 May 2001 in the Carson Convalescent Center in Carson City, NV.

Memorial services will be held in Hawthorne on Saturday, 12 May at the Hawthorne Ward Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, South A Street, starting at 11:00 a.m.

A native of Cannonville, UT Johnson was born to Irving Ammon Johnson and Daisie Campbell Johnson on 2 Apr 1927. He was a graduate of Tropic, UT high school.

Johnson moved to Hawthorne following service in the U.S. Army for four years and was a veteran of the Korean War. During his time in the army he earned two bronze stars while serving in Korea. Dean was also one of the men who became the first members of the Hawthorne unit of the Nevada Army National Guard when it was organized in 1952. He was employed at the Hawthorne Naval Ammunition Depot as an electrician and worked there for several years. Leaving the Hawthorne area in the late 1970's, he took up residence at Lamore, CA.

He loved music, especially country, and enjoyed playing his guitar. He also was an avid bird watcher. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a former member of the Hawthorne Ward.

Preceding him in death are his parents and two brothers, Dorr Johnson and Merrill Claren. Immediate survivors are his son, Dean Johnson of Reno, NV; a daughter, Beatriz Whitney also of Reno and step-daughters, Karen Kottke of Poulsbo, Washington and Sharon Patrick of Lakeview, OR; brothers, Ven Johnson of Yerington, NV and Golden Johnson of Cannonville, UT; sisters, Ardis and husband Robert Evans of Hatch, UT; Jan and husband Chris Larsen of Renton, WA; Dixie and husband Don Munson of Salt Lake City, UT; Colette and husband Edward Liddell of Salt Lake City, UT; and Karel and husband Gary Robinson of Sparks, NV. Also surviving are one grandchild, two step-grandchildren and two great step grandchildren.

Arrangements are under the direction of Walton’s Chapel of the Valley in Carson City.

NELSON, William Blevins

William Blevins Nelson was born on 17 Sep 1928 in Superior, Nebraska, and died on 1 May 2001, in Duarte, CA. He spent the majority of his formative years in Fillmore, CA, where he was active in his church and the Boy Scouts and was an avid reader.

He graduated from Hasstings College in Hastings, Nebraska with a bachelor’s degree and completed his Bachelor of Divinity degree at San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo, CA. He was ordained at the Fillmore United Presbyterian Church in 1954. He served as an ordained minister for the United Presbyterian Church until his retirement, serving churches in Urich/Creighton, Missouri; Rolfe, Iowa; Delta, Colorado, Live Oak, CA; Morenci, Arizona; Indana/Oak Hill, Kansas; Ottumwa, Iowa; and Hawthorne, NV. Additionally, he was active as a volunteer fireman, in the Lions Club, and in many comunity programs.

Reverend Nelson was athe son of the late Dr. William Newton Nelson and Helen Jane Muir Nelson. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Alice Nelson and Margaret Nelson Mobley. He is survived by his sister, Patricia Collins, son Mark Nelson, daughter Faith Cieslak, grandsons Robert Hack and Troy Cieslak, and great-grandson Carlen Hack.

OAKS, John

John Oaks, 82, of Hawthorne, passed away on April 30, 2001 at Mount Grant General Hospital. He was born 16 Oct 1919 in Beekman, Louisiana to Henry and Delcenia (Anderson) Oaks.

He has resided in Hawthorne since 1985, coming from Bastrop, Louisiana. John was a retired cotton farmer. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a member of the V.F.W. Post #2313 and American Legion Post #19, both in Hawthorne, and the Masons. He was also a deacon of Bethel Baptist Church in Hawthorne.

John was preceded in death by his parents and daughters, Faye Oaks, Linda Oaks and Clara Bluford. Survivors are his wife, Essie Mae Oaks, of Hawthorne; sons, Henry Oaks of Fallon, John Oaks, Jr., Wayne Oaks, Douglas Oaks, and Lee Oaks all of Chicago; daughter, Vivian Oaks of Maywood, Illinois; Sister, Julia Mae Robinson of Altadena, CA; 16 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Memorial services were held Saturday, 5 May, at Bethel Baptist Church. He will be buried in Burr Oaks Cemetery, Alsip, Illinois. Arrangements were under the direction of Gunter’s Funeral Home, Hawthorne.

OWENS, Moses

Long-time Hawthorne resident Moses Owens passed away on May 16, 2001 at the Veterans Medical Center, in Reno, Nevada at the age of 73. Moses was born in Mer Rouge, Louisiana on January 28, 1928, and was the son of Ivory and Bernice Washington Owens.

Moses had lived in Hawthorne for 33 years, coming from Bastrop, Louisiana, He was custodian supervisor retired from Mineral County School District. He also served in the Army during the Korean War.

Moses was a deacon at Bethel Baptist Church.

Preceding him in death were his parents. Survivors are his wife, Willie Mae Owens of Hawthorne; sons, Jimmy Lee Greely of Bastrop, LA, Roosevelt Campbell of Crossett, AR, David and Kenny Owens of Sparks, nV. Carolynn D. Souza Reading, age 47, passed away August 13, 2000 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Reno, NV. She was born in Hawthorne on February 22, 1953 to Frank a. and bernice Simmons Souza.

Carolynn attended Mineral County schools, graduating from Mineral County High School with the Class of 1971.

She moved to Reno, living there for many years. She was one of the first women bartenders at MGM Grand. She had worked at the Reno Hilton before moving back to Hawthorne in December of 1999.

Preceeding Carolynn in her death was her mother in 1994.

Surviving her are her father, Frank A. Souza of Hawthorne; brothers, Gary Souza of Sparks, NV, and Frank A. Souza of Dallas, TX. She also has many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Thursday, August 17, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Gunter’s Funeral Home Chapel in Hawthorne.

Graveside Services will be Friday, August 18, at 10:00 a.m. at the Hawthorne Cemetery. Arrangements are under the directgion of Gunter’s Hawthorne Funeral Home.

ROBINSON, Lois

Lois Robinson, 95, a long time resident of Hawthorne, died Sunday, 23 Jul 2000 at Mt. Grant General Hospital. She was born 8 Dec 1904 in Buckholts, TX to Robert McLin and Lola daniel.

In 1942 Lois and her husband, Felix and son, Robert moved to Hawthorne where they made their home. She was a homemaker and enjoyed her activities here. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Mt. Grant Chapter and a charter member of the Community Presbyterian Church in Hawthorne.

She is survived by her son, Robert of Hawthorne; two grandchildren, Danny Robinson of Carson City and April Robinson of Reno; also four great-grandchildren.

Private burial services were held at the Hawthorne Cemetery and a Memorial Service will be announced at a later date.

Arrangements were under the direction of Gunter’s Funeral Home in Hawthorne.

Professional trackers were brought in by plane to find him; search was broadcast from coast to coast. Was eventually found by trackers. Died at Gabbs, NV, 8 Dec 1946; buried 11 Dec 1946 at Manhattan, NV. Survived by parents, and two sisters, Irma Shaw and Miss Catherine Sullivan; a brother, Danny Sullivan, Jr. all of Gabbs; his cousins, Mrs. John Blolock, Shirley and Thelma Humphrey of Hawthorne.

SWANSON, Merle

Merle Swanson passed away at age 87 in Health South Hospital, in Reno, Nevada on 21 Jul 2000. Merle was born in Bozeman, MT on 6 Jan 1913 to
Lorenso and Marcelene Dame Swanson.

Merle lived in Mina, NV for over 60 years, moving there from Hawthorne.

He was very active in the trucking and mining industries most of his life. He had been actively engaged in the trucking business for over 58 years and has serbed with the Nevada State Truckkng Transport Association for over 25 years. He held number 1128 contractors license with the State of Nevada and had held the license for over 52 years.

Mining played a large part in the life of Mewrle and his late wife, Margaret. Some of the mining properties in Mineral County Merle held owenership included the Simon Silver and Lead Mine and several deposits of trace minerals. Merle had served as president of the Mineral County Chapter of Western Mining Council and also as president of the Western Miners and Prospectors of the State of Nevada and president of the Reno Chapter.

When Merle was in his twenties, he was a boss at the Mary Mine located at Silver Peak, NV.

Keeping actively participating in the mining industry and educating the public about the importance of mining, Merle had been invigted numerous times to give lectures on mining to school classes in Mineral County. In 1999 he was asked to give a presentation on mining in Reno before a special hearing of the U.S. House of Representatives. This talk is recorded in the mining files in Washington D.C.

He was a member of BPO Elks Lodge #1704, Hawthorne; served on the State Board of Equalization; was a state "champion mucker" for many years straight, having won that title in competitions held at mining celebrations; was a member of the NRA; and a member of Nevada Miners and Prospectors Association.

Merle was also a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was the Group Leader of the Mina-Luning Branch for the church for many years, and held that position at the time of his death.

Preceding Merle in death were his parents, his wife Margaret Eileen Swanson in 1988, and son Merle Buford Swanson in 1935, brothers, Harry, Lars and Charles, and sister, Gladys.

Survivors of Merle are his daughter NaDean Bedford of Jamestown, CA; four grandchldren and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held the evening of Tuesday, 25 Jul at Gunter’s funeral Home Chapel, in Hawthorne. Funeral Services were held today, Wednesday, 26 Jul, at 1:00 p.m. at the Hawthorne Ward Chapel of the LDS Church. Burial was in the Mina Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Gunter’s Hawthorne Funeral Home.

WADDELL, Newell Ryder

Newell Ryder Waddell, 75, of Hawthorne, passed away on Thursday, 3 May 2001 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Reno, Nevada.

He was born 4 Aug 1925 in Lemoyne, Pennsylvania to Walter and Lucretia Waddell.

Newell was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his brothers, John and William, and his son, Patrick. He is survived by his wife "Bride" Anne of Hawthorne; borther, Walter Waddell of New Cumberland, PA; sister, Helen Wyatt of Loves Parks, IL; sons, Michael Waddell of Emmaus, PA, and Andrew McCormick of Tustin, CA; daughters, Rebecca Forbes of Lake Oswegu, OR; Elaine Brown of Lauderhill, FL; and Alisa McCormich of Belmont Shore, CA; grandchildren, Jennifer and Mark Waddell and Scotland and Britain Forbes.

In lieu of flowers, "Newt" requested a simple act of kindness in his memory and no funeral service.

WILLIAMS, Rodney George

Rodney George Williams passed away at age 69 on 20 Jul 2000 at Mount Grant general Hospital in Hawthorne. Rodney was born in Eureka, Utah on 27 Sep 1930 to George Cecil Williams and Lavern Runnels.

He was raised in Rockford, Idaho and South Salt Lake City, Utah. Rodney’s left hand was paralyzed in a childhood accident, but he never considered himself disabled in any way and always worked hard and never complained.

Rodney lived in Hawthorne for two years coming from Tonopah, Nevada. He worked as a manager in Paint and Hardware stores. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Preceeding rodney in death were his father, his wife Lorraine in 1974, and son Roy Galloway. Survivors of Rodney are his daughters, Carilyn Llewellyn of Tonopah, Marilyn Beesley, of Yucca Valley, CA, and Lora Cox of Anaheim, CA; mother, Lavern Williams of St. George, Utah; son, John Holt of Hawthorne; sisters, Betty McCarty and Dawna Farrell, both of St. George, Utah; 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
