Death Valley Art

Death Valley's landscapes are starkly beautiful, not lifeless; specialized communities of plants and animals thrive in the diverse enviornments in the valley and its surrounding mountains. When treated with respect, Death Valley is seldom deadly. Always have extra water for you and your automobile.

Ubehebe Crater

Ubehebe Crater is 65.6 miles North from Furnace Creek Resort. Besides flash floods and earthquakes, add volcanic eruptions to Death Valley's list of past cataclyms. The crater is a half-mile wide, and 600-feet deep. This is the only crater visible from the parking lot, but by hiking up the rim to the right one can see several distinct craters. It is a breath taking view. . . I'm not sure if from fright or the beauty. On my first trip to the craters I was surprised when we pulled into the parking lot not to see anything but the flat desert surroundings. When I stepped out of the car and onto the walk way; I wanted to grab hold of something. When I say it is a big hole in the ground - that is exactly what it is. A large hole with all the colors in the world and chuck full of mystery and intrigue.

Rhyolite Art

1.5 miles North of State Route 58 at a point 4 miles West of Beatty. Paved roads throughout.Someone has taken the time to bring artistic talent to the desert. While it doesn't blend in with the desert beauty; it is very well done and a fun side trip.

Golden Canyon

3.3 miles South of Furnance Creek turn left into the Golden Canyon parking lot. The hike into the canyon is a 1 1/2 mile round trip up an easy grade. I wish I was a better photographer so you could see the beautiful colors here. To make matters worse it was an overcast day when these shots were taken. The trail guide booklet tells you to turn around in about a half hour and walk out. Don't believe it for a minute. There is so much to see and little side trails to explore.
